A simple FI balance sheet: which items are rate-sensitive?
This is a new source example, not a continuation of the $260 million gap table. Assets total $270 million; the other side totals $270 million including $20 million of equity. The task is to decide which balances can have their interest rate changed within one year. Accounting balance does not imply that RSA equals RSL: equity is not interest-paying debt, and some assets and debts keep their existing rates beyond the horizon.

Read the instruments as contracts. A CD is a certificate of deposit. A bankers acceptance is a time draft for which the bank has accepted the payment obligation; the handwritten guarantee-like cue refers to that function, not simply collateral. Commercial paper is short-term corporate borrowing. The source compares it with a T-bill as a short-term instrument, but it is not issued by the Treasury and does not have identical credit risk.
The debit-card annotation beside demand deposits connects the account with everyday transaction access. A debit card accesses the deposit; it is not a separate financing instrument. Passbook savings are savings balances. Their rate-sensitivity treatment will be an assumption in the next liability slide, not something that can be settled just by their everyday names.
The margin distinguishes Treasury bills, notes and bonds by usual original maturity; it gives a broad 1–10-year reminder for notes and over ten years for bonds. Yet the table names a six-month T-note and three-year Treasury bond. Read those exercise numbers as remaining time to maturity/repricing rather than silently rewriting the source labels. An instrument originally issued for longer can have a shorter remaining maturity today. The “short time → low risk” annotation is best read as a fixed-income price-sensitivity reminder, not a law that short instruments have no credit or refinancing risk.
Türkçe açıklama · Basit finansal kurum bilançosu: hangi kalemler duyarlı?
Bu tablo önceki 260 milyonluk örnekten ayrıdır. Aktif toplam 270 milyon, sağ taraf özkaynak dahil 270 milyondur. Ancak sağdaki 20 milyon özkaynak faiz ödenen borç değildir. Bilanço eşitliği A = L + E iken yeniden fiyatlama hesabı yalnız seçilen RSA − RSL’yi kullanır.
Rate-sensitive assets: build the $155 million total
The next slide resolves the asset side using the one-year horizon. The $50 million of one-year consumer loans just meets the cutoff if principal is repaid at year-end. The $30 million of three-month Treasury bills and $35 million of six-month Treasury notes mature and can be reinvested inside the horizon. The $40 million floating-rate mortgage position resets every nine months, even though its final maturity is thirty years.
RSA = $50 m + $30 m + $35 m + $40 m = $155 m
This is a classification by next repricing opportunity, not a ranking by final maturity. The thirty-year mortgage is included because its rate can change after nine months. The three-year fixed-rate Treasury-bond position is excluded because its rate does not reset in this horizon under the source’s basic treatment.
The excluded $115 million consists of $25 million long-term consumer loans, $70 million three-year Treasury bonds and $20 million ten-year fixed-rate mortgages. Their existing interest income has not disappeared. It is simply not repriced by this one-year shock calculation. Check that included and excluded balances add to total assets: $155 m + $115 m = $270 m.
Including a loan that matures exactly at year-end is the source’s horizon convention. It does not mean the loan earns a new rate for the entire preceding year. A time-weighted first-year earnings forecast would distinguish a January reset from a December reset; the simple CGAP classification does not. This distinction will explain one of the model’s weaknesses later.
Türkçe açıklama · Faize duyarlı varlıklar: 155 milyon toplamını kur
Bir yıllık ufka giren dört aktif vardır: 50 milyon bir yıllık tüketici kredisi, 30 milyon üç aylık T-bill, 35 milyon altı aylık T-note, 40 milyon dokuz ayda bir oranı yenilenen mortgage. Toplam 155 milyondur.
Rate-sensitive liabilities: the $140 million assumption
Use the same horizon logic on funding. The source includes $40 million of three-month CDs, $20 million of three-month bankers acceptances, $60 million of six-month commercial paper and $20 million of one-year time deposits. Each matures within the source’s one-year cutoff and can require replacement funding at a new rate.
RSL = $40 m + $20 m + $60 m + $20 m = $140 m
The $40 million of two-year time deposits lies beyond the one-year cutoff. Equity is not interest-paying funding, so its $20 million is excluded from RSL. The remaining issue is the $40 million of demand deposits and $30 million of passbook savings. The source explicitly treats them as rate-insensitive in the baseline, while drawing attention to arguments for including them.
That qualification matters economically. A bank may change an administered savings rate; depositors may move balances into a better-paying product or withdraw money; the bank may replace those funds with more expensive funding. A transaction balance can therefore have indirect or behavioral interest-rate sensitivity even if the simple contractual classification calls it insensitive. The source’s $140 million answer is an assumption-based result, not a universal definition of deposits.
As a transparent sensitivity extension, suppose all $70 million of demand and savings deposits were classified as sensitive. RSL would become $210 million, so RSA − RSL would be $155 m − $210 m = −$55 m rather than +$15 m. This is not the source’s baseline answer. It shows why a defensible classification assumption can matter more than the arithmetic that follows.
Türkçe açıklama · Faize duyarlı borçlar: 140 milyonluk varsayım
Kaynak bir yıllık RSL toplamına 40 milyon üç aylık CD, 20 milyon üç aylık bankers acceptance, 60 milyon altı aylık commercial paper ve 20 milyon bir yıllık vadeli mevduatı alır. 40 + 20 + 60 + 20 = 140 milyon.
CGAP and the CGAP ratio: direction and scale
The source combines the preceding two slides: one-year RSA is $155 million and one-year RSL is $140 million. The cumulative gap is therefore +$15 million. This bank is asset-sensitive over this horizon under the stated deposit assumptions. It is different from the earlier six-bucket example, whose one-year gap was −$15 million.
CGAP = $155 m − $140 m = +$15 m CGAP ratio = CGAP / total assets = 15 / 270 = 0.055556 ≈ 5.6%
The dollar gap gives a net repricing balance. Dividing by total assets puts that exposure on a scale useful for comparison across institutions. The denominator is $270 million, not $155 million RSA, not $250 million total debt and not $20 million equity. A $15 million gap can be a small exposure for one institution and a large exposure for another.
The sign gives direction under an equal-shock assumption. If both earning and funding rates rise by the same amount, this positive-gap institution gains NII because more assets than liabilities reprice. If rates fall equally, it loses NII. The handwritten question asks which rate movement creates risk for the asset side; the complete answer must connect that asset-side effect to the liability side rather than merely saying that asset income falls.
The 5.6% ratio is not a 5.6% return on assets, not the interest margin and not a prediction that earnings fall by 5.6%. To predict the simplified dollar change in NII, the gap still needs to be multiplied by a specified rate shock. For a common +1 percentage point shock, $15 m × 0.01 gives +$150,000; for −1 point, it gives −$150,000.
Equal changes in asset and liability rates
Page 66 leaves the four cases open; page 67 supplies the completed reasoning. The key assumption is that asset and liability rates move by the same number of percentage points. Under that assumption, both interest revenue and interest expense move in the direction of rates. The gap determines which dollar movement is larger.

For a positive gap, RSA exceeds RSL. Multiplying both balances by a positive shock gives a larger income increase than expense increase; multiplying by a negative shock gives a larger income decrease in absolute dollars. For a negative gap, RSL is larger, so the expense movement dominates. This explains all four rows without memorizing arrows.
Take the source $155 m/$140 m position. At a common +1 point, income rises $1.55 m and expense rises $1.40 m, leaving +$0.15 m. At −1 point, income changes −$1.55 m and expense −$1.40 m, so ΔNII = −1.55 − (−1.40) = −$0.15 m. In the source arrow table, “greater than” between downward arrows refers to the magnitude of the fall, not the signed comparison −1.55 > −1.40, which would be false.
The highlighted practical warning at the bottom of page 67 then relaxes the assumption. Lending and borrowing rates may move in the same direction but by different amounts. If asset rates rise 1 point and funding rates rise 1.5 points, this same positive-gap institution has ΔNII = 155 × 0.01 − 140 × 0.015 = −$0.55 m. A positive gap is not protection against every rate increase.
Weaknesses of the repricing model
The source ends this section by explaining what the model leaves out. Its first limitation is market value: keeping a fixed coupon does not keep an asset’s market price fixed. A funding-gap result measures only part of interest-rate exposure. That is why the lecture next changes the lens to the maturity model.
The second limitation is overaggregation within buckets. In the source’s three-to-six-month bucket, the diagram shows +50 in months 3–4 and −50 in months 5–6, with zeros at the other displayed positions. The net bucket gap is +50 + (−50) = 0. Yet an asset reset early in the bucket and a liability reset late in it do not have the same income exposure during the intervening weeks. Summing the whole bucket hides that mismatch. A zero net gap is not a proof of zero timing risk.
Third, the simple model ignores runoffs. Loans can return principal through scheduled amortization or prepayment before the stated final maturity; institutions also originate and retire loans continually. Those returned funds may be reinvested at a new rate. A fixed-rate mortgage that was initially placed outside the horizon can still create rate-sensitive cash flows through principal repayment. Ignoring them makes the original classification too coarse.
Fourth, a basic on-balance-sheet gap omits cash flows from off-balance-sheet activities, such as futures used for hedging. A hedge may offset some economic exposure even though the simple RSA/RSL table cannot see it; conversely, an unrecognized derivative position can add exposure. The practical response is not to abandon the table, but to state its scope and combine it with finer timing, realistic rate transmission, runoff assumptions and market-value analysis.
Türkçe açıklama · Yeniden fiyatlama modelinin zayıflıkları
Kaynak dört temel eksikliği sırayla verir. Birincisi piyasa değeridir: kupon sabit kaldığında tahvilin fiyatı yine değişebilir. Bu yüzden NII açığı bütün faiz riskini ölçmez. Sonraki maturity model bölümü bu eksikliği ele almak için gelir ölçüsünden değer ölçüsüne geçer.
İkincisi aralık içinde aşırı toplamadır. Üç–altı aylık grupta 3–4 ayda +50, 5–6 ayda −50 bulunuyor; toplam sıfır. Ama erken yeniden fiyatlanan varlık ile geç yeniden fiyatlanan borç, aradaki dönemde aynı faiz etkisini yaşamaz. Tek net sayı bu zamanı gizler. “Gap sıfır, risk yok” sonucunu bu yüzden çıkaramayız.
Üçüncüsü run-off, yani anaparanın sözleşmenin son vadesinden önce geri gelmesidir.
After the lesson
Work it through yourself
These original practice questions use the lecture’s mechanisms. Write your reasoning before opening the model answer; opening it does not mark your progress.
1. Reclassifying a funding assumption
Using the source $270 m balance sheet, suppose demand deposits remain insensitive but all $30 m passbook savings become sensitive. Find revised RSL, CGAP, CGAP/assets and the equal +100 bp annualized NII response.
Türkçe soru
270 milyonluk kaynak bilançosunda vadesiz mevduat RI kalsın, fakat 30 milyon tasarruf mevduatının tamamı RS olsun. Yeni RSL, CGAP, CGAP/aktif ve ortak +100 baz puan NII etkisini bul.
Check the reasoning and self-assessment criteria
RSL = 140 + 30 = $170 m; RSA remains $155 m. CGAP = −$15 m; ratio = −15/270 = −5.56%; ΔNII = −15 × 0.01 = −$0.15 m. Credit requires naming the changed assumption and not reclassifying the $40 m demand deposits as well. This alternative does not replace the source baseline +$15 m gap.
Türkçe çözüm ve değerlendirme ölçütü
RSL 170, RSA 155; açık −15 milyon. Oran −15/270 = −%5,56; NII değişimi −0,15 milyon = −150.000 dolar. Yalnız 30 milyonun varsayımı değişmiştir; 40 milyon vadesiz mevduatı da eklemek soruyu değiştirir. Temel kaynak +15 sonucu ile alternatif −15 sonucunu ayır.
2. When both rates rise
Use RSA $155 m and RSL $140 m. Asset yields rise 60 bp; funding rates rise 90 bp. Find ΔNII and explain why the CGAP sign alone is insufficient.
Türkçe soru
RSA 155, RSL 140 milyon. Varlık getirisi 60, fonlama maliyeti 90 baz puan artsın. NII değişimini bul; açık işareti neden tek başına yeterli değil?
Check the reasoning and self-assessment criteria
ΔNII = 155 × 0.006 − 140 × 0.009 = 0.93 − 1.26 = −$0.33 m. Both rates rise, but not equally. The liability cost increase dominates despite positive CGAP. A complete answer uses separate shocks and explains why CGAP×one common ΔR is invalid.
Türkçe çözüm ve değerlendirme ölçütü
155 × 0,006 − 140 × 0,009 = 0,93 − 1,26 = −0,33 milyon.
3. A zero bucket gap
A bucket contains $50 m of assets resetting at its start and $50 m of liabilities resetting at its end. Is a zero bucket gap sufficient to establish zero earnings exposure during the bucket? Explain without inventing a day-count assumption.
Check the reasoning and self-assessment criteria
No. The aggregate balance difference is zero, but the asset earns the new rate before the liability pays it. There can be an interim income effect. Its exact amount requires reset dates, the rate scenario and accrual conventions. Credit requires identifying within-bucket timing and refusing to infer an unsupported numerical amount.
Türkçe çözüm ve değerlendirme ölçütü
Hayır. Net bakiyeler eşit ama varlık yeni faize önce geçer. Arada gelir etkisi olabilir.
