Classify an institution by the claims it issues to obtain funds, then by the assets it holds. Reading both sides of its balance sheet explains its business model.
The source first distinguishes a broad category from a function. A financial institution conducts financial transactions such as investment, loans and deposits. A financial intermediary connects agents with surplus funds to agents with a financing deficit. The classic example is a bank that consolidates deposits and uses the funds to make loans. Different institutions can provide different parts of the financial process; they are not all miniature deposit banks.
The printed classification then separates depository from non-depository institutions. A depository institution relies importantly on taking deposits from the public. The deposit is a claim the customer holds against the institution, so it is a liability on the institution’s balance sheet. Non-depository institutions obtain their main funding through other claims or contractual payments: insurance premiums, pension contributions, fund shares, issued debt or equity.
Be careful about the direction of the word “deposit.” An insurer can keep money in a bank account. That deposit is an asset of the insurer, not a deposit liability it has issued to the public. Holding a deposit therefore does not turn a non-depository institution into a deposit-taking bank. The classification asks how the institution obtains funds, not whether it ever uses a bank.
The next table puts this distinction to work. Read each row as a small balance sheet: the middle column is the source of funds; the right column is their use. Equity and fund shares can appear as funding sources even though they are not identical to contractual debt. The source table uses “primary liabilities” as a broad funding heading, so keep the economic funding interpretation separate from the narrow accounting meaning of liability.
Primary assets and liabilities of intermediaries
The table is a general institutional classification with U.S. examples, not a list of current Turkish licenses. Its four depository rows share a funding source—deposits—but do not have identical assets. Commercial banks have a broad lending and securities book; savings institutions emphasize mortgages; credit unions emphasize consumer loans. A shared liability type does not imply a shared risk concentration.

Contractual savings institutions collect funds through recurring or event-related contracts rather than ordinary deposits. Life insurers receive premiums and must be prepared for policy obligations; pension and government retirement funds receive contributions for retirement-related benefits. Their asset choices connect today’s inflows to later liabilities. The table’s distinction between life and fire/casualty insurance also reminds you that different insured events create different cash-flow needs.
Investment intermediaries have another structure. A finance company issues instruments such as commercial paper, stock or bonds and uses the proceeds for loans. A mutual fund sells fund shares and holds a securities portfolio. A money-market mutual fund also issues shares but invests in money-market instruments rather than the stock-and-bond mix shown in the ordinary mutual-fund row. Its shares remain fund claims, not automatically bank deposits.
Use the table to predict the first management question. Mortgage-focused institutions must consider long-lived asset cash flows; insurers must align assets with policy obligations; a finance company reliant on issued debt must be able to renew market funding. These are implications of the source balance-sheet structure, not additional claims that every institution today follows exactly the same portfolio proportions.
Bunlar kaynak–kullanım eşleşmesinden türetilen sorulardır; tablo her kurumun değişmez portföy oranını vermiyor.
Key terms: connect the vocabulary
The final slide of this opening unit is a keyword list. Use it as a network rather than fifteen isolated definitions. Direct finance leaves the saver holding the ultimate issuer’s claim; indirect finance inserts the intermediary’s own claim. Brokerage helps a transaction occur; asset transformation changes the characteristics of the claim offered. The dealer’s bid is its buying price and its ask is its selling price.
The cost terms describe different frictions. Information cost concerns learning relevant facts; monitoring cost concerns watching behavior and condition; transaction cost concerns arranging and executing exchange; liquidity cost concerns obtaining cash when needed. Asymmetric information means relevant knowledge is unevenly held. Delegated monitoring assigns the information/oversight work to an institution; economies of scale can reduce average cost as the activity is performed at larger scale.
Financial regulation is the framework of requirements and oversight intended to shape financial conduct and preserve useful services. Depository versus non-depository describes the institution’s funding model. Denomination divisibility makes a large financial investment accessible through smaller units. These connect the institution’s function to its funding and social role.
Two listed terms anticipate later material. Financial globalization is the growing cross-border integration of financial claims, institutions and markets. It can widen funding and diversification opportunities while linking shocks across countries. A financial crisis is a serious disruption of financial intermediation, markets or payments, rather than merely any one price decline. The opening slide lists these words without a full crisis model; the later risk chapters will make the transmission mechanisms concrete. The handwritten date at the bottom is 29.09.2026, Tuesday—a note-date marker, not an additional economic result.
Türkçe açıklama · Anahtar kavramların birbirine bağlanması
Anahtar kelimeleri neden-sonuç zincirine yerleştir. Doğrudan finansmanda tasarrufçu nihai ihraççının hakkını; dolaylıda aracının çıkardığı hakkı tutar. Brokerage işlemi kolaylaştırır; asset transformation sunulan sözleşmenin özelliklerini değiştirir. Dealer’ın bid’i alış, ask’i satış fiyatıdır.

Work it through yourself
These original practice questions use the lecture’s mechanisms. Write your reasoning before opening the model answer; opening it does not mark your progress.
1. Classify the insurer
An insurer collects premiums and holds some cash in a bank deposit. Is it depository because it owns that deposit? Explain both balance-sheet sides.
Check the reasoning and self-assessment criteria
No. Its principal customer funding is premiums, not deposit liabilities. The bank deposit is an asset of the insurer and a liability of the bank. Full credit requires both the source-of-funds criterion and the asset/liability direction.
Türkçe çözüm ve değerlendirme ölçütü
Hayır. Ana müşteri kaynağı primdir; halka mevduat borcu ihraç etmiyor. Bankadaki mevduat sigortacının aktifi, bankanın borcudur. Tam cevap fonlama ölçütünü ve bilanço yönünü birlikte açıklar.
2. Compare two fund rows
Both mutual funds and money-market mutual funds issue shares in the table. What distinguishes their uses of funds, and why does the common funding label not prove identical risk?
Türkçe soru
Tabloda mutual fund ve money-market mutual fund pay ihraç ediyor. Fon kullanımları nasıl ayrılır, ortak kaynak etiketi neden aynı risk anlamına gelmez?
Check the reasoning and self-assessment criteria
The first row holds stocks and bonds; the money-market row holds money-market instruments. Risk also depends on the underlying assets, maturity, credit quality and redemption arrangements. A source-of-funds label alone cannot establish identical asset cash flows.
